One of my favorite parts of Parents magazine is the "It Worked For Me" section. Think of this book as a 468 page article filled with tips and advice from parents all over America! However, not only do you get the parents' personal tips, but you also get professional advice for such things as building self-esteem, teaching etiquette, vaccination schedules, and so many other relevant and sometimes urgent topics.

I think of this book as being the equivalent of having several hundred friends that you can pick up the phone to call for advice when your child is in the throes of a tantrum, isn't interested in the potty AT ALL, or won't eat/latch on/give up that binky. There are also sections on planning a vacation with kids, doing crafts, and finding a reliable caregiver, so it's not all kid-behavior oriented...but it is all common-sense, practical advice that when you are on your last nerve, may just add a few axons to the bundle!

Gentling: A Practical Guide to Treating PTSD in Abused Children Overviews

Breakthrough Treatment Offers New Hope for Recovery

Gentling represents a new paradigm in the therapeutic approach to children who have experienced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and have acquired Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result. This text redefines PTSD in child abuse survivors by identifying child-specific behavioral signs commonly seen, and offers a means to individualize treatment and measure therapeutic outcomes through understanding each suffering child's unique symptom profile. The practical and easily understood Gentling approaches and techniques can be easily learned by clinicians, parents, foster parents, teachers and all other care givers of these children to effect real and lasting healing. With this book, you will:
  • Learn child-specific signs of PTSD in abused children
  • Learn how to manage the often intense reactivity seen in stress episodes
  • Gain the practical, gentle, and effective treatment tools that really help these children
  • Use the Child Stress Profile (CSP) to guide treatment and measure outcomes
  • Deploy handy 'Quick Teach Sheets' that can be copied and handed to foster parents, teachers, and social workers

    Clinicians Acclaim for Gentling

"In this world where children are often disenfranchised in trauma care--and all too often treated with the same techniques as adults--Krill makes a compelling case for how to adapt proven post-trauma treatment to the world of a child."
    --Michele Rosenthal, HealMyPTSD.com

"Congratulations to Krill when he says that 'being gentle' cannot be over-emphasized in work with the abused."
--Andrew D. Gibson, PhD Author of Got an Angry Kid? Parenting Spike, A Seriously Difficult Child

"William Krill's book is greatly needed. PTSD is the most common aftermath of child abuse and often domestic abuse as well. There is a critical scarcity of mental-health professionals who know how to recognize child abuse, let alone treat it."

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (8/09)

"Gentling" is described by the author as "... the process of delivering the balm of gentle gestures." This includes using both compassion and empathy in dealing with young children who are victims of severe abuse. In "Gentling," the author discusses his personal experiences in working with young children who have stress disorders. In doing so, he also thoroughly covers the differences in the behaviors of children who are acting out because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD,) versus normal children who are just misbehaving. It is also noted that a child who is being raised in a home that is highly dysfunctional, can also experience stress disorders, even if an acute incident has not occurred.

Because young children's brains are still developing they tend to be more acutely affected by abuse and stressful environments. Based upon his experience, Krill has found that adult PTSD treatments cannot be successfully adapted to meet the needs of young children who are dealing with stress disorders. One reason why these treatments do not work on young children is because they are not yet able to express themselves like adults can. They also have not developed the same internal resources to draw upon that an adult can create.

Included in this book is an extensive appendices which provides vital information that includes a Child Stress Profile, Handouts for Caregivers, and Quick Teach Sheets. There are also interesting case studies which demonstrate how the gentling process was applied to real situations. Unfortunately, because many abused children end up being moved around in the foster care system, their treatments are interrupted. If more professionals became familiar with Gentling, then there would be more people to pick up where others left off.

Krill believes that victims of child abuse have their own version of PTSD. If this child does not receive appropriate treatment, the behaviors can become worse, more embedded and harder to treat. Therefore, I believe that it is essential that people who are involved with these children especially clinicians, parents, foster parents and teachers read "Gentling." By doing so it will help them to recognize the behaviors and deal with the child more effectively.

Back To School means getting Your Kids Organized and Back on Track

    Posted by GOO | Posted in , , | Posted on 13:31

It is only the middle of August, but it was not long before the return of children to school, and it is time to bring weekday routine back on track.

There's no time like the present, worrying about how to organize your children for the school year. E 'come back to school shopping, why fight the crowds the last week of August, when you can get a jump start on things now?

I spoke with several friends who have recently decided to one of their biggest obstacles every autumn, will alwaystheir children, and every morning. Over coffee, we talked about what works and what does not, within their respective families.

First of all, most of us believe that simply does not get enough time, every morning all we have to do. Of course, we can use our first alarm, but there is something more than that. Everyone's morning schedule must be considered. For example, only about 45 minutes to get ready, but you can take and receive a half hour or moreWhole family out the door. It 'important to a reasonable amount of time allotted for each family member to be ready and then build in some contingency plan for those days when you can not go according to plan.

In our house my husband and I first get up, our individual workouts, take a shower and ready, and then see if the children have taken the snooze button on their respective alarms. Our alarm goes off his daughter first, followed by our son of a halfHours later.

The best way to have my friends and I have found to stay on top of our morning routine and eliminate a lot of stress is to do some things a priority the night before. Get up late all morning - no matter how early it is expected, it is not wise.

Create a communications center. Get a firm grip on the activities of your family with the creation of effective communication that keeps all the little details, how to organize a day school activities,Dates, invitations, notebooks, etc. The kitchen is usually removes the ideal place for such a message.

Its center consists of a large family calendar, a dry erase board for messages, an electronic bulletin board, and a receipt for each family member. Make it a rule that packs immediately and important documents in the appropriate in-put-boxes must be unloaded. As parents it is our job, through our child to go into the field just prior to filling, in order to ensure that itwill be no surprises as the morning.

Eliminate the battles for clothing. When your kids move around a lot and usually before ending up in conflict with them on what they want to contribute, to encourage them, their clothes, instead of taking decisions in the night and took her clothes before going to bed .

Organize backpacks before bedtime. To ensure that everything is ready for the next day to promote the loading of the books, homework and other things, like sports clothes and school signsForms in backpacks your kids' last night. Then all he has done, to have their lunch (even the night before, but kept refrigerated). To keep things simple backpacks hanging on hooks near the front door along with all others need to take, which is not in his backpack.

Prepare for breakfast the night. Consider mounted a muffin mix, before making a container of frozen orange juice or table at night. Offer a limited selection of healthyFood easy to prepare. Set the breakfast preparation and cleanup tasks among family members.

Bath time schedule. Bad When you need a control premium in your home, a rotation schedule and a specific time for each child. The use which indicates that your child their time is expired. In order to further reduce congestion Bath, each child their own space mirror and a support staff, in his room.

Create a table in the morning with difficulty. If all they needand every morning is not fair if a person left off at the kitchen table, empty the dishwasher, wash the dishes, instead, give everyone a task and send it in graphical form. Let each child check off tasks as completed. In our house we have a no-play-ready to rule, for example, there are no computers or TV sets to take into account the tasks were performed, and have everything ready for school.

Effort and reward positive behavior. You can encourage your child tofor special activities, such as the time when history is ready for a few minutes before or one weeks reward positive effort, with a family outing. U.S. stars, tokens or as a way to detect the positive behavior throughout the week.

With all that said and done, I firmly believe that one of the best things is that you do for your family to maintain a reasonable bedtime and waking schedule. This does not mean that different from the routine on weekdays too much during the weekend. You see, when you set a daily rhythmdo not work against you.

Mixing things up dramatically for two of the seven days can really destroy havoc on the body of your child watch a real fight Monday morning for everyone. It is a stressful Monday morning the whole family can leave worn out and too tired to do all evening Monday night to prepare for the next day. So do yourself a favor and do your children, set a specific time for them to bathe, brush their teeth and go to bed, seven days a week.

    Bedwetting Solutions for parents frustrated

    Posted by GOO | Posted in , , , , , | Posted on 09:29

Frustrated parents spend much time looking for solutions to wet the bed. In older children with bed wetting problems are not uncommon, and although a wide range of products available to keep your baby dry all night, is a solution much better to solve the problem enuresis outset.

If, after a child still wet the bed again or enuresis beyond the age of four or five, can be a good idea, investigated for theirPediatrician, only for any physical problems that could be related to wet the bed. In general, however, the bedwetting is not a sign of a serious physical problem, and will generally like children and the elderly are more familiar with the feeling of a full bladder and to develop greater self-control to stop.

When you use an alarm bedwetting, the most important consideration is that the device fits comfortably which is not out in the middle of the night. It 'also important to note that children tend to throw on the bed and in turn do not respond well to alarms in most cases. If you have a child who moves around a lot in bed, you probably need to seek another solution to this problem.

An enuresis alarm - could be the solution to wet the bed for your child?

    Posted by GOO | Posted in , , | Posted on 13:23

Research has shown that bed-wetting alarm is a highly effective treatment to stop this disorder in children. The success rates are around 65-75%, and the chances of success are even greater when the enuresis alarm, along with the motivational therapy is used.

Enuresis is more common than you might think of children of school age. While most children are dry at night until the age of five years, a certain percentage (15-20%)still wet the bed after the age of five years. The good news is that most children eventually "grow itself" by wetting the bed. Approximately 15% of children become dry each year naturally after the age of five years. However, a small percentage of children still wet the bed is in adolescents and adults too!

Most parents try to limit the solutions to wet the bed after dinner and to ensure their child attends the bathroom before bedtime. Some parents during theirChild before going to bed for a final visit to the bathroom in a secure manner with the hope of a dry night. Although these methods make use of some older children who can not always be moist, with a little help to dry nights achieved. If your child is dry during the day and have no health concerns, an enuresis alarm can be the solution to wet the bed for your child.

An enuresis alarm is a device for detecting moisture, an audible alarmwhen the child urine. The child is awakened by the alarm and then go to the bathroom to finish urinating. Repeated warnings of the child when he or she begins to urinate, the brain is to recognize, finally, the feeling of a condition of full bladder. The child at the end before closing the sounds of alarm and time should be able to move throughout the night to go without the need to urinate.

An enuresis alarm requires a commitmentMother and child, especially during the first weeks. Your child will need immediate help with bed wetting alarm, since this response is an important part of the process. The average time for a child to achieve dryness, if you use a bed wetting alarm is about 12 weeks. Some children achieve dryness before, while some may take even longer.

Note that not all children will succeed and one of the most common reasons for not giving up soon. With a bed-wetting alarm stamina is required and should be prepared at first for some restless nights. Most parents agree that the results are well worth the effort! To see your child's self esteem increases, if he or she reaches the dryness is really worth it.

There are many causes of bedwetting, but the most common reason for the bed at night wetting in children is a process of maturation delay. However, it may be possible that the child> Bedwetting is caused by a medical problem. It is advisable to consult your pediatrician, your child wet the bed before starting treatment.
